The Gro tester / temperature HI98118 pH is our latest pocket meter for measuring the pH of a hydroponic nutrient solution. This modern-looking meter is only 0.7" thick and very ergonomic, fitting perfectly in your hand. The HI98118 has a very large and easy-to-read LCD screen that displays pH and temperature, along with calibration, stability, and low battery indicators. All operations are simplified with two buttons. One is for turning the meter on/off and the other for automatic one or two-point calibration.

The HI98118 Groline pocket pH tester is an economical way to measure the pH of hydroponic nutrient solutions. Maintaining an optimal pH is essential for maximizing optimal growth. The general rule is that as pH increases, the solubility of minerals and nutrients decreases. It is important that nutrients are soluble for plant uptake and use for growth. The pH of the nutrient solution can also affect nitrogen-fixing bacteria for the plant to utilize. Each plant has an optimal pH level for growth. Below is a table for the ideal pH range for a variety of plants.
The HI98118 can be used to measure pH in soils as well as nutrient solutions. North Carolina State University has described a procedure known as leaching through the sampling method. This method is used for container plants where 50 ml of leachate is collected from a well-watered plant and then tested.
To measure soil pH as a suspension, the USDA recommends a mixture of 1 part soil to 1 part water. The suspension is allowed to rest for 10 minutes for the solids to settle, and the pH of the liquid above can be measured.
The HI98118 is an advanced meter, maintaining simplicity. The front of the meter has two buttons. One is for turning the meter on and off, while the other is used to enter calibration mode. There is a third button in the battery compartment that allows the user to customize the meter to their preference. Customization includes temperature reading in °C or °F, automatic selectable shut-off after 8 minutes, 60 minutes, or disabled, and finally the option to use standard Quick Cal pH/EC from Hanna or traditional pH buffer values of 4.01, 7.01, and 10.01.
The HI98118 features a unique removable fabric junction. The reference junction of a pH electrode, also known as a salt bridge, provides an electrical pathway between the internal reference cell and the sample. Any obstruction of the junction will result in a disruption of the electrical pathway. When this happens, the reading will be erratic and take a long time to stabilize. With the removable junction, a small portion of 1/8" is extracted or pulled to expose a clean surface. With the renewed junction, the obstruction is cleared allowing the meter to still be used. The total length of the junction is approximately 1", so the junction should only be extracted periodically.
